Leipzig Book Prize for European Understanding – Culture

The Austrian author Karl-Markus Gauß receives the Leipzig Book Prize for European Understanding 2022. He is awarded for his book “The incessant hike: Reportages”, as the jury announced on Monday. In it he gathers “sensitive stories from special places and people in Europe”, it says in the explanatory memorandum. Gauss devotes himself to minorities, such as the Aromanians, who have their own language and live in northern Greece, Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Albania. The prize, endowed with 20,000 euros, is one of the most important literary awards in Germany.
