A red-red-green minority government currently governs Thuringia. What happens after the state elections in the fall? Left Party co-leader Schirdewan also does not rule out talks with the Wagenknecht party.

The co-chairman of the Left Party, Martin Schirdewan, does not rule out a coalition with the alliance of the former Left Party politician Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) in Thuringia. “The Left has said they want to lead a progressive government with Bodo Ramelow as Prime Minister,” he told the Rheinische Post and the General-Anzeiger.

“All democratic forces must at least be able to talk to each other, especially when it comes to preventing the rise of the new fascism and sending a clear democratic signal,” emphasized Schirdewan. “We are smart enough to know that. We’ll have to see whether others will be too.”

When asked about a coalition with the CDU, Schirdewan said: “The situation in Thuringia is challenging. But the Left and the CDU found compromises with each other during the time of the red-red-green minority government.” He continued: “We have seen that Bodo Ramelow and CDU top candidate Mario Voigt can talk to each other if they want to talk to each other. And otherwise: wait for election evening!”

Ramelow: Aggressive mood against politicians

In Thuringia, like in Saxony, a new state parliament will be elected on September 1st. Ramelow (Left Party) currently leads a red-red-green minority government. The AfD is ahead in polls for the state elections.

With a view to the local elections in Thuringia at the end of May, Ramelow complained about the sometimes aggressive mood against politicians. “The violence and disinhibition that politicians face is growing,” he told the news portal t-online.

He gave one example, among others Arson attack on the house of an SPD politician in Waltershausen a few weeks ago. Ramelow said that in some places there is already a lack of people who dare to go into local politics. “In some places the mood has become so aggressive that they are being told by family or friends: Please don’t run for district administrator, mayor, whatever.”
