Marseille had not won in L1 for a long time, on March 10 to be exact, so this victory came at just the right time to maintain their hopes of qualifying for a European Cup, even more so against a rival. Falling behind Lens (2-1), OM suffered at times but the main thing was elsewhere.
Buoyed by the inevitable Aubameyang, the Marseille team proved that it had the answer, that it would play its card well on both tables, Championship and Europa League, and that it still had energy. Because after opening the score in the first minute by you know who (see below)the Marseillais suffered, were saved by the post on a header from Sotoca, were logically sanctioned by Saïd (1-1, 77th), and the worst could be possible.
For OM, deliverance finally came from Pape Gueye, after an improbable recovery from Haïdara (2-1, 85th). With this victory, Jean-Louis Gasset’s team moved up to seventh place and came within two lengths of their evening opponent, who may have lost more than one match at the Vélodrome.
The player: Aubameyang, the inevitable
But where will he stop? For weeks, even months, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been leading OM’s attack, and this was again the case against the Sang et Or. From the first minute, the Gabonese international took a cross from Ndiaye perfectly. And while his team was suffering at 1-1, it was he, with a subtle pass, who shifted Pape Gueye for the winning goal. A goal, an assist, Aubameyang is always there.
