Lecornu in the West Indies, trial of R. Kelly and the suspect of the murder in Vendée interned

Did you miss the early morning news? We have concocted a recap to help you see more clearly.

It’s a visit to the West Indies to show government support. But on his arrival this Tuesday evening in Guadeloupe, the Minister of Overseas Territories, Sébastien Lecornu, will above all be faced with an explosive situation. Clashes did indeed occur during the night from Sunday to Monday on the island, where containment was put in place to curb the Covid-19 epidemic. Thursday, when he travels to Martinique, the minister will also be able to note that the health situation is not improving. The authorities thus reinforced the containment measures there on Monday. The tourists were even invited to “leave the territory”. The only positive news for the moment: after the call for mobilization launched on Sunday by Olivier Véran, 240 caregivers responded and will leave this Tuesday for a 15-day support mission in the West Indies. The Minister of Health will also be in Martinique on Thursday.

It is a particularly media trial which opened Monday in New York. R. Kelly, a former R’n’B star in the 1990s, is on trial in federal court in Brooklyn. The 54-year-old singer is in court on various charges, including underage sexual exploitation, extortion, kidnapping, bribery and forced labor. Charges to which he pleaded not guilty. As reported
RFI, he faces up to twenty years in prison. And that’s just the beginning.

The man who accused himself on Monday of the murder of a priest in Vendée, is now in a hospital. His custody was lifted for “incompatibility with his state of health,” we learned on Monday from sources familiar with the matter. The 40-year-old suspect, who suffers from psychiatric disorders, was taken to hospital for treatment, one of these sources added. An investigation is opened for “intentional homicide” and, as it stands, “no motive linked to a terrorist motive” appears in this case.
