The series not to be missed in April
“The Serpent”, elusive and poisonous serial killer
Like Charles Manson, Charles Sobhraj exploits a flaw in the hippie dream. Inspired by sadly real facts, The snake, British miniseries in eight episodes available April 2 on Netflix, follows the fate of this little-known French serial killer, who manipulated, robbed and killed 15 to 20 young backpackers on the roads of Kathmandu, mainly in the Bangkok of the 1970s, helped by his companion Marie-Andrée Leclerc (Jenna Coleman, impeccable femme fatale on the verge of a nervous breakdown). Charles Sobhraj owes his nickname “Serpent” to the fact that he embraces his victim before distilling his venom and that he constantly molts so that the authorities do not confuse him. Faced with Tahar Rahim, hypnotic and icy, in the skin of this murderous king of the run, ready to pounce on any psychological fault of his victims, Billy Howle plays the deeply human Herman Knippenberg, secretary at the Embassy of the Countries -Bas, who improvises a detective as obsessive and tenacious as he is stressed. The scenario, clever with its comings and goings in time, avoids any glorification. The polished reconstruction of Asia in the seventies visually illuminates this story, which is as macabre as it is captivating.
The tragic story of “Me, Christiane F.”
A modern adaptation of the bestseller Me, Christiane F. 13 years old, drug addict, prostitute. This book, published in Germany in 1978, under the title Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo (We, the children of the Zoo station), traces the tragic story of Christiane Felscherinow, written by journalists Kai Hermann and Horst Rieck. From this book was taken in 1981 a film of the same name, directed by Uli Edel on a soundtrack by David Bowie. The eight-part series, available April 9 on Amazon Prime Video, follows a gang of teenagers (Christiane, Stella, Axel, Benno, Babsi and Michi) who, to escape a dull and miserable existence, plunge into the frenzy of Berlin nights at the end of the 1970s. Little by little, they plunge into drugs and prostitute themselves in this subway station in West Berlin to pay for their daily doses of heroin. Will this addiction lead them to their loss?
“The Nevers”, the steampunk series by Joss Whedon
With this steampunk series created by Joss Whedon, Buffy’s daddy, is HBO finally getting its new Game Of Thrones ? In Victorian-era London, The Nevers, broadcast in France on April 12 at 8:40 p.m. on OCS City, some residents – mostly women – are starting to develop strange powers. These people, known as the “affected”, threaten the established order of good British society. Among them, the reckless Amalia True (Laura Donnelly, seen in Outlanders), “Who could die for the cause and kill for a drink” and Penance Adair (Ann Skelly, seen in Vikings), “Genius of invention”, manage the Orphanage, a home that welcomes the “affected” like the famous professor Xavier who takes under his wing mutants to make X-Men, and protect them from their many enemies… On the poster of this fantastic series, Olivia Williams (Dollhouse, Counterpart), James Norton (Grantchester), Tom Riley (Da Vinci’s Demons), and Eleanor Tomlinson (Poldark), as well as Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead) and Ben Chaplin (The Red line).
“The Flight Attendant”, the earthy black comedy with Kaley Cuoco
Fans of The Big Bang Theory will have the pleasure of meeting Kaley Cuoco! In The Flight Attendant, adaptation of the eponymous novel by Chris Bohjalian for HBO Max, broadcast in France from April 27 on Warner TV, the actress (who is also a producer of the show) lends her features to Cassie Bowden, a flight attendant with a serious inclination for booze and one-to-one adventures, as with that dark hunk, Alex Sokolov, sitting on the 3C seat (Michiel Huisman, aka Daario Naharis in Game Of Thrones)… Except that she wakes up the next morning in a hotel room in Bangkok, with a serious hangover and the corpse of the passenger lying beside her. For fear of being accused of the murder, she does not call the police, cleans up the crime scene and acts as if nothing had happened … A dark comedy, deliciously absurd, where we delight in seeing his heroine incredibly inept making all the wrong decisions.
The interns of “Hippocrates” resume service
DoctorsHippocrates resume service on April 5 on Canal +! At the start of season 1, a strange virus imposed a quarantine on the holders, forcing interns to manage an internal medicine department on their own. In this season 2, written before the coronavirus pandemic and whose filming was shaken up by the health crisis, a pipe rupture forced the emergency department of the Poincaré hospital to fall back into the internal medicine department. “A metaphor for the hospital taking water”, sums up the creator of the series, Thomas Lilti. His portrait of a public hospital under pressure, out of breath, held at arm’s length by the nursing staff, today takes on its full political dimension.
