In June 2021, Hungary enacted a law against “gay propaganda”. Now the authorities seem to be taking apart children’s series themselves and are taking action against Netflix over a kiss.

The Hungarian media regulator announced last Wednesday that it was investigating the streaming service Netflix for a possible violation of the controversial anti-LGBTQ+ law. That reports the online magazine “Politico”. There are said to have been “several complaints” about a cartoon series showing two girls kissing.

It is the children’s series “Jurassic World: New Adventures”. The regulator said they were required to investigate any complaint but could not comment on the specific case as the investigation is still ongoing, Politico said.

This scene criticizes Hungary in the Netflix series:

In June 2021, Hungary enacted a law containing restrictions on information about homosexuality and transsexuality. Despite violent protests from the people and the whole EU, educational programs or advertising by large companies that declare solidarity with homosexuals and transsexuals, among other things, have been banned for over a year. There should also be no more educational books about it. Hungary’s justification is the protection of minors.

The children’s series, which is recommended for ages seven and up, is about two teenage girls named Yaz and Sammy on adventures. They camp out in tents on Jurassic Park Island surrounded by dinosaurs and also bond in the form of a kiss.

So far, since the law was introduced, there have been a total of 84 complaints about a violation. However, no real consequences are said to have resulted from this. The regulator said if it finds that Netflix has violated the “propaganda” law, it must inform the Dutch Media Authority. This is the main body responsible for overseeing Netflix as the company’s European headquarters are in the Netherlands. The Dutch regulatory authority would have the last word. The Dutch media regulator declined to comment on the case, nor did Netflix itself.
