In an interview, Karl Lauterbach settles accounts with FDP politician Wolfgang Kubicki. Even the Stiko gets her fat off. In addition, the Federal Minister of Health recommends the fourth vaccination for under 60-year-olds.

SPD Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach has sharply criticized FDP politician Wolfgang Kubicki. Lauterbach was annoyed, among other things, by Kubicki’s statement that a flat corona wave was to be expected in the fall. “These are epidemiologically and virologically erroneous positions,” he told the “Spiegel”. When asked if it was nonsense what Kubicki was saying, Lauterbach replied: “Yes, definitely”.

He may be familiar with other areas, but “as is well known, that is not his strength”. Kubicki’s position has no relevance for him. He also has a whole history of misjudgments in corona politics. “It can’t surprise anyone that he’s wrong again this time.”

Regarding his handling of Kubicki’s statements, he said: “If he says things that are wrong and directly affect my work, then I’ll get in touch and we’ll exchange ideas.”

Lauterbach recommends fourth vaccination

In the same interview, Lauterbach spoke out in favor of a fourth corona vaccination for those under 60. This should be done in consultation with the responsible family doctor.

“If someone wants to enjoy the summer and not take the risk of falling ill, then I would recommend vaccination to younger people in consultation with the family doctor,” said the minister. The Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) had so far only recommended the fourth vaccination to citizens over the age of 70 and people from risk groups.

With the fourth vaccination you have a completely different level of security. The risk of long-Covid is significantly reduced for a few months, as is the risk of infection.

Criticism of Stiko

Lauterbach indicated in the conversation that Stiko would follow suit with their recommendation. “The European Commission has followed the recommendation that I have been making for two months,” he said, adding: “I’m pretty sure Stiko will do the same.”

Lauterbach then practiced general criticism of the work of the Stiko. When asked whether the Commission needed a new boss, Lauterbach replied: “I think we need to think about how Stiko’s work can become more dynamic.”

According to Lauterbach, a vaccine adapted to Omikron can still be taken after the fourth vaccination. He expects such a vaccine for late August or early September.
