Danny Latza will no longer be the undisputed Schalke captain. Thomas Reis softens the hierarchy around the pad a bit.
Danny Latza has been the captain of Schalke 04 for about a year and a half now – even if he is rarely in the starting XI. Under Thomas Reis, however, this position of power will soften a little.
In the summer, Frank Kramer consciously decided that Danny Latza would remain in office as captain. Knowing full well that he would hardly be one of the permanent staff and would therefore only rarely be in the starting XI, he left it at the personal details. Probably also because the ex-coach didn’t want any unrest in the team and against himself.
Latza hasn’t really led his blue and white teammates onto the field very often, considering that he’s been in office for a year and a half now. On the one hand, this is due to some downtime and, on the other hand, to his bank seat, which he occupies more often than he is allowed to play from the start. That hadn’t changed until now under the direction of Thomas Reis.
Under him, however, Latza will no longer remain the undisputed captain. Although Reis will not take the bandage off him per se, he will leave it on another player’s arm more often, even though he may be in the starting XI.
Reis softens the Schalke hierarchy a bit with the captain’s armband
Compared to the table football the coach explained this decision: “I make no secret of the fact that it is not so important to me who wears the bandage on his arm. What is important is that each individual performs his or her managerial tasks.”
With or without a bandage: Latza will remain an important leader. However, here and there he will have to deal with the fact that teammates also take over this post.
In reality, this doesn’t change that much. Simon Terodde, for example, has often acted as captain. He will now increasingly do that when the native of Gelsenkirchen plays.
“The two regulate that among themselves,” says Reis meaningfully. It is very important to him that his leaders lead the way – and he does not see much importance in the piece of material.
