Latvia’s Prime Minister Karins has announced his resignation and that of his cabinet. Last week he had tried to rebuild the cabinet – without success.

Latvian Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins has announced that he and his government will resign later this week. “On Thursday I will present the resignation of myself and the cabinet to the President,” Karins said at a press conference.

Karins, who has been in office since 2019, said last Friday that he would not resign for the time being, but wanted to continue the current government until a new one was formed.

coalition partners leans cabinet reshuffle away

In the Baltic Sea state bordering Russia, Karins has led a three-way alliance between his liberal-conservative party Jauna Vienotiba, the national-conservative National Alliance and the centrist-conservative electoral alliance United List.

On Wednesday he proposed to both of them that three ministerial posts should be reshuffled and that a firm agreement be reached on a number of political projects. However, they rejected the proposal, according to Karins.

Latvia’s prime minister said the current coalition is not cooperating. This was already evident in the presidential elections at the end of May, when the three-party coalition was unable to agree on a candidate. He therefore has two options: find a way to work in the existing coalition or form another government, said the 58-year-old.
