Road blockades in Berlin – police intervene quickly
The Last Generation had announced that they wanted to paralyze Berlin with road blockades for their action weeks in the fall. However, traffic in the city continues to function – but drivers are annoyed.
Last generation posts videos of aggressive drivers
The Last Generation posted videos online showing drivers obstructed by the blockades honking loudly and gradually pushing slow-moving protesters away with their cars to clear a path. On Thursday, the group released videos showing a cyclist grabbing a demonstrator and throwing him onto the sidewalk.
More than 500 police officers on duty
Because of the protests, the police have been on duty with 500 to 600 police officers in recent days. Plainclothes police were also increasingly deployed. This week alone, more than 300 criminal complaints have been filed against the demonstrators for coercion in traffic and, in some cases, resistance to the police. The public prosecutor’s office has initiated around 2,500 investigations since 2022. The Tiergarten district court made more than 140 judgments. 74 judgments are legally binding.
The last generation is now calling for a quicker end to the use of energy sources such as natural gas, oil and coal by 2030. Since the blockades began at the beginning of 2022, their demands have changed again and again.
