“Last Generation” protests with road blockades without glue

As of: March 16, 2024 4:41 p.m

Climate activists from the “Last Generation” have again protested in many major German cities. As in the previous year, they blocked central traffic connections, but they decided not to stick them. Apparently there were no clashes.

The group “Last Generation” has once again demonstrated for more climate protection with road blockades in several places in Germany. Unlike previous campaigns, the participants did not become stuck.

According to police, around 130 participants in Berlin blocked the Warschauer Bridge, a central transport connection in the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district, at midday. They repeatedly stood and sat on both lanes of the road.

According to police, the protest is peaceful

In Munich and Regensburg, the police counted 120 and 150 demonstrators, respectively, at reported and unreported gatherings. The police said there were no major traffic problems in Munich.

In Leipzig, too, around 150 activists gathered in the city center and blocked traffic on Leuschnerplatz. Protected by the police, the group positioned themselves on the road to take a stand against global warming.

There were also actions in Freiburg, Karlsruhe and at Stuttgart Airport. The police spoke of a peaceful protest. Further blockades were planned in Bremen and Cologne.

Also blockade in front of the LNG terminal

According to police, 27 activists blocked traffic on an access road to the Sassnitz ferry port not far from the Rügen terminal for liquefied natural gas (LNG). The emergency services initially let the group do their thing. This is the case at least as long as the action has the character of a meeting.

A spokesman for Last Generation had previously said the demonstrators wanted to stay longer, possibly until Sunday. The liquid gas terminal is “the pinnacle of fossil fuel madness.”

Group changed strategy

The “Last Generation” calls for radical climate protection, including the complete abandonment of coal, oil and gas. Since the beginning of 2022, the group has organized road blockades in which participants stuck themselves. Recently, however, she announced that she would change her strategy and avoid sticking in the future. She called for “disobedient gatherings” nationwide.
