“Last generation” in Munich: protests at the Stachus and on the A9 – Munich

Last generation climate activists protested in Munich on Monday morning. At eight o’clock, nine people stuck themselves to the asphalt at the Stachus. They were sitting on the ground, the police were talking to them, they had placards in their hands, before they were removed from the ground two hours later. The northbound lane was closed and drivers were diverted away from the blocked area at an early stage.

The climate activists had already announced on Friday that they would set an example again this Monday morning. While their previous actions had always been unannounced, this time the exact location was even named: the area around the taxi rank on Karlsplatz, in the middle of the city.

But there were other unannounced actions by climate activists on Monday. On the freeways around Munich, members of the “Last Generation” climbed onto gantries and stuck themselves there, police confirm. This happened on four bridges on the A 9, so the lane at the Munich-North junction in the direction of Munich is closed. The “Last Generation” distributed videos of the action on Twitter.

On the A 96, members stuck to two bridges. The lane was not blocked, the cars drove on at reduced speed. A woman even sat down on the freeway and apparently wanted to glue herself before a police officer pulled her away. At what point this happened is not yet clear.

At the Stachus in the morning, passers-by kept stopping by the activists, talking to them and encouraging them: “Bravo,” they said. Or: “You are not alone”. On the other side of the street – at the Palace of Justice – there was a spontaneous counter-demonstration. Five representatives of the AfD led by Wolfgang Wiehle, a member of the Bundestag, gathered. Wiehle called for “tougher intervention by the authorities against the climate extremists” via megaphone.

The police had been prepared for the action of the “Last Generation” at the Stachus. Officials diverted traffic at Sendlinger Tor early on. Motorists were also advised to switch to public transport. According to the police, the city of Munich had approved demonstrating on the road at Karlstor for Monday, but not sticking.

In recent months, the “last generation” has repeatedly blocked roads. Some activists have already been fined. In Bavaria, some even went to prison as a preventive measure. Among other things, the group is demanding a speed limit of 100 kilometers per hour and a nine-euro train ticket for the whole of Germany.
