In Karlsruhe, an activist wearing an Olaf Scholz mask ran onto the property of the Federal Constitutional Court. The Federal Chancellor found clear words for the actions of the “last generation”. The activists were “stunned” by the criticism.

Bundescancer Olaf Scholz (SPD) has sharply criticized the sticking actions of climate demonstrators of the “last generation”. “I think it’s completely crazy to somehow stick to a picture or on the street,” said Scholz on Monday in a school in Kleinmachnow, Brandenburg.

He has the impression that it doesn’t help anyone to change their mind, but above all it annoys everyone. He finds it “completely justifiable” that rallies are held, demonstrated and advocated for his goals. “But that’s an action that I don’t think will help,” said Scholz. On the EU project day, the chancellor visited the Eigenherd school and answered questions from the students.

On Monday morning, two activists of the so-called “last generation” were temporarily arrested in front of the Karlsruhe Federal Constitutional Court.

A person with an Olaf Scholz mask in front of his face ran onto the court property with a hammer drill and was prevented by federal police officers from tampering with a stone with the inscription “Federal Constitutional Court”, said a police spokesman. Another activist wore a warning vest and had glue with him. He was also temporarily arrested.

It was not initially stated whether the activists were men or women. After their personal details were determined, both were released and sent off. Now it is determined, among other things, because of trespassing.

A spokeswoman for the “last generation” said in a statement justifying the action that the federal government had no plan for a way out of the climate catastrophe. “In doing so, she is breaking the constitution.” Meanwhile, the activists were “stunned” by the Chancellor’s criticism of their actions.

“Mr. Scholz, how dare you stand in front of the children whose future you are destroying and say that you find protesting your destructive policies ‘completely insane’?” the activists said in a statement. After all, it was the chancellor’s fault that people on Germany’s streets had to try peacefully to fight for their fundamental rights. “The cause of our protest lies in the irresponsible fueling of social collapse by the Scholz government.”

Fines for sticking action on Rubens painting

After a sticking action in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, the district court there sentenced three activists of the “last generation” to fines on Monday. In August 2022, two men aged 25 and 60 stuck their fingertips to a gold-plated frame of a painting by Peter Paul Rubens, and a 24-year-old filmed the action.

The court convicted the men of damaging property. The public prosecutor had demanded six months in prison, the defense attorneys had pleaded for acquittal and justified this, among other things, with an emergency in the climate crisis.

The judge affirmed an emergency situation. The climate crisis is a current danger. But there is not even a remote connection between climate protection and damage to the frame. The decision is not yet final – the 24-year-old has already announced that he wants to appeal.
