Last generation and preventive detention: the supposedly noble gesture – Opinion

Before the IWA, the “Last Generation” activists allow themselves to be sent to prison without appeal. This is supposed to sound noble, but it involves a great risk.

One of the emblematic images of protest produced by the “Last Generation” is the image of a young person who lets himself be done with anything. Silent, seemingly unmoved. Introverted. This is a recurring motif. An example: A truck driver freaks out on Hamburg’s Elbe bridges, kicks a young activist who was blocking the road in the stomach; the activist does not fight back. Or, worse still, a truck driver in Stralsund rams a blocker with his vehicle and even drags him several meters; the activist remains eerily calm.
