Many of them were once loved and petted – and still ended up in Europe’s largest animal asylum in Berlin. The photographer Gordon Welters looked deep into their eyes.

At her side: Porthos, an American Bully, a compact dog with pendulous cheeks. Now Porthos can be seen on Instagram; His new owner regularly posts pictures of herself and her pet there. Porthos’ former carer Daniel Prinich is also happy about this: “Having a dog is the best thing I can imagine.”
