Large exhibition on Paul Cézanne in London – Culture

Of

Alexander Menden

In 1902 Paul Cézanne moved into a new studio on the hill Les Lauves in the north of his native town of Aix-en-Provence. From there you had an unobstructed and quite spectacular view of the limestone mountains Montagne Sainte-Victoire, which stretches to the east of the city. Cézanne soon became obsessed with a mountain peak, which he painted over and over again – a total of 88 times. A selection of these mountain paintings is in the large autumn exhibition dedicated to Cézanne at the Tate Modern in London. It is an example of the artistic maturity that the painter had reached four years before his death.
