It seems a bit pathetic when two museums today try to save the honor of a man who became famous as a painter of naked women. While there is largely a feminist consensus in the cultural world on the question of how the heterosexual white man should be taught about his depictions of other people, especially when they do nothing harm, the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart and the Museum Barberini in Potsdam support Amedeo Modigliani and his positive Female image into the breach. The Italian painter was not a “drug-addicted womanizer”, as “Modigliani’s stubborn image” claims. He “did not degrade his models to objects, but rather maintained a relationship of equality” with them.
