Landshut: Nurse accused of manslaughter apologizes in court – Bavaria

A carer accused of manslaughter of a senior citizen asked his surviving relatives for forgiveness at the start of his trial before the Landshut regional court. The 33-year-old said through his lawyer on Tuesday that he regrets what happened but cannot remember the incident.

The man is accused of mistreating the senior citizen in her home in Eching (Landshut district) in December 2022, causing life-threatening injuries. A son who lived in the house found the injured elderly woman. According to the investigation, she was hypothermic and dehydrated at the time. The nurse initially fled, but then turned himself in to the police in Regensburg.

The 89-year-old died in a hospital a few days after the attack. The public prosecutor’s office is convinced that the nurse struck the woman lying in bed on the head and upper body so severely that she suffered numerous broken bones. Why he attacked her initially remained unclear.

The man took over the care in August 2022. He may have been incompetent due to alcohol consumption and a psychiatric problem. In court, the man said he started drinking and hearing voices in October. Three more days of hearings are scheduled for the proceedings. Among other things, two psychiatric experts are to be heard.
