If the nine-year-old son is a big Lamborghini fan, then very few fathers would come up with this idea: Dr. Sterling Backus is making his and his son’s dream come true. He builds a Lamborghini Aventador. This car, which normally cannot be had for less than 300,000 euros, comes from the 3D printer. The physicist and hobby mechanic made an impressive 1:1 replica of the original sports car from many small individual parts that came from this printer and many hours of work. The actual construction of the car consists of a tubular steel chassis – the engine from a Chevrolet Corvette from 2005. But what does the carmaker Lamborghini say about this replica? The Italian carmaker, which is part of the Volkswagen Group, was so impressed when it heard about the project that it even helped the hobbyist with parts, so the company donated the headlights and taillights and even an original steering wheel. The parts from the 3D printer were reinforced by Backus with fiberglass mats and epoxy resin, then smoothed and finally painted with a spray gun from the hardware store. The infantry veteran put five years into this hobby and he’s not done yet. The idea? It was created while father and son were playing a car video game and always chose the Aventador as their favorite car.
