Lake Ohrid: an ecosystem is dying – knowledge

Lake Ohrid between Albania and North Macedonia is the oldest lake in Europe and home to hundreds of endemic species. But humans are on the verge of extinguishing this unique ecosystem forever. Out and about with activists who want to save the lake.

“This is totally illegal” is a phrase that Vladimir Trajanovski says a lot. He says it is about restaurants that have built large concrete platforms in Lake Ohrid, about the huge piles of rubbish that pile up just a few meters from the shore, and about new stretches of beach that hotels have dug into the reed belt. Trajanovski is a citizen of the city of Ohrid and an activist. He is involved in the Ohrid SOS citizens’ initiative and tries to protect the unique biotope in and around the lake.
