According to police estimates, a major fire on Lake Constance in the old town of Überlingen in Baden-Württemberg caused property damage of around two million euros late Tuesday evening. The cause of the fire is still unclear and the subject of investigations, said a police spokesman on request.

According to the police, the fire was reported around 9 p.m. on Tuesday. Accordingly, when the rescue workers arrived, the roof structure of a house was already in full fire and later collapsed. The building was almost completely destroyed by the fire, police said. The fire also spread to two adjacent buildings, which were badly damaged.

The fire brigade and police were on site with a large contingent, according to the announcement. The fire object and adjacent houses were evacuated to protect the residents.

The residents of the affected houses are safe and unharmed, a spokesman for the fire brigade said on Wednesday night when asked by the German Press Agency. “We were quickly at the scene of the fire and then had the fire under control,” said the spokesman.

Emergency services were still on site that night to look for embers with thermal imaging cameras. Post-extinguishing work was still going on on Wednesday morning, the spokesman said.
