Laila Biali and Emma Rawicz in the Unterfahrt – Munich

With the Canadian singer Laila Biali, the (former) Munich act label has already established a charismatic and genre-open crooner, in a sense as the successor to her famous compatriot Diana Krall. After two albums with their own pieces that meander into pop and rock, their new “Your Requests” is dedicated to the interpretation of jazz standards. In the Underpass she presents it in a double concert with the latest act discovery. This is probably the next big thing from the booming London jazz scene. The young British tenor saxophonist Emma Rawicz, who comes from the violin and piano and also plays the flute and bass clarinet, only found her main instrument six years ago. It’s all the more incredible how virtuoso and self-confident she plays it now. Rich in detail, powerful and mostly bone dry. Which is perfectly reflected on her act debut album “Chrome”, which she presents at her Unterfahrt premiere with her world-class quartet: one of the most intelligent and gripping jazz rock albums in a long time.
