The demonstrations began in Berlin around May 1st. While a left-wing demo in Wedding went as planned, a feminist women’s demo surprised many with an early end.

With pyrotechnics, egg throwing and occasional stone throwing, demonstrators are through on the eve of May 1st Berlin-Friedrichshain drawn. According to police, around 2,800 people took part in the queer-feminist demonstration “Take back the night”.

A police spokeswoman was initially unable to say whether there were any arrests. Yesterday afternoon, hundreds of people marched peacefully through the Berlin district of Wedding for peace and social justice.

In left-wing Friedrichshain, the officers had expected aggressive behavior in advance after there had been attacks on the police with bottles thrown and injured police officers in recent years.

The train also started moving significantly late. The organizers ended the demo early – why they did so remained unclear at first. Late in the evening there were still a lot of people standing on Warschauer Straße, dancing and singing “Take back the night”.

The demonstration in Wedding under the motto “For Peace and Social Justice”, however, went as planned without any disruptions. The police said there were around 500 people, the organizers estimated the number of participants at around 800.

The police accompany the numerous demonstrations around May 1st with a large contingent. On Wednesday, around 5,500 police officers are expected to be out and about throughout the city due to the many and larger demonstrations.
