Kunstfest Weimar opens with Günther Uecker’s Buchenwald Memorial – Culture

With a pessimistic sentence, Ingo Schulze delivered a second motto for this year’s Weimar Art Festival. The writer said at a panel discussion in the Hotel Elephant that what he has learned over the past few years is that fascism is something that can always come back. This gloomy prognosis was not a mood killer, because the atmosphere in the room, like at the opening of the big Thuringian cultural event, was depressed anyway. The official motto of the three-week event, “Remembering creates a future”, may be meant optimistically. But in Weimar, remembering with a war on the horizon that was started by a dictatorial state is more like remembering Buchenwald. And the central opening event on the Theaterplatz was dedicated to this commemoration.
