You could call Julien Gracq a painter, a painter with words. In all of his books he demonstrates his art of description: in expansive, rhythmically springy sentence structures he plays around the external world, literally models it, and gives it a relief. For him, landscapes are always historical; testimonies marked by man that need to be penetrated.
