A ban on chain husbandry and stricter rules for dog breeding – these are two of the regulations that Agriculture Minister Klöckner wants to introduce for animal husbandry. Dealers should be better trained.
Federal Minister of Agriculture Julia Klöckner wants to tighten the regulations for keeping dogs and the pet trade in Germany. Your ministry is currently adapting the requirements to new scientific findings, said Klöckner of the “Rheinische Post” published in Düsseldorf.
Keeping dogs in chains is forbidden in principle. The requirements for dog breeding would also be tightened: “A minimum time of four hours for the daily handling of the puppies is then specified, for example.”
Klöckner announced new rules for dog owners last summer.
Specialist dealers should advise better
In view of the animal boom in the corona pandemic, Klöckner said she wanted to make the sellers in the pet trade more responsible. They are the first point of contact for buyers.
That is why I will ensure more expertise here by ordinance: The staff must be trained and receive regular further training. In this way we ensure an improvement in animal welfare.
“Animals are not just any commodity”
For many people, animals were important companions and consolation donors in the corona pandemic, said the minister. “But animals are not just any kind of commodity that you just buy.” Anyone who wants to keep a pet has a special responsibility. Like other organizations, the German Animal Welfare Association had expressed fear that the animal shelters would have to take in more and more animals that had been purchased during the Corona lockdowns.
