Klaus Meine turns 75: “I’m on the longest encore of my life”

Klaus Meine has been the frontman of the “Scorpions” for over 50 years. For his birthday, he talks about a frightening diagnosis in the 80s – and reveals that he didn’t see the success of “Wind of Change” coming.

Mr. Meine, no band played at a higher altitude than the “Scorpions” in Bolivia a few years ago. How does it sing at almost 3700 meters?
It gets pretty tight there. Not only on stage, but already in the hotel room, on the way to the bathroom you get a little short of breath. We’ve just been to Bogotá, that’s 2,600 meters, but it’s really happening in La Paz. Nothing works there without coca tea.
