Uli Hoeneß shared in a one-two from Sport1 against Andreas Rettig and the Qatar criticism.

The upcoming World Cup in Qatar is currently causing more and more discussion and criticism. So also in Sport1 double passwhere Uli Hoeneß let himself be connected by phone call in order to dish out the criticism and the critics.

The closer the World Cup gets, the louder the discussions about Qatar as the venue and the prevailing – or rather lacking – rights of workers, women and homosexuals.

Also in Sport1 double pass the tournament and its side effects were discussed on Sunday afternoon.

Not surprisingly, studio guest Andreas Rettig took on Qatar and the World Cup. The former DFL managing director, who is best known for his time in the management of FC St. Pauli, is known for putting his finger on the wound when it comes to such issues. Born in Leverkusen, he rarely refrains from criticizing the financial influence in football and other crooked machinations.

Hoeneß by call in the ‘double pass’: criticism of Rettig and “hypocrisy”

His arguments displeased a certain Uli Hoeneß, who apparently watched the program as a viewer in front of his home TV. Apparently his need to comment on Rettig and his criticism was very great. After all, he let himself be put through to the show by phone call – not for the first time.

He turned directly to “Andreas Rettig, the king of hypocrites,” as he opened. He first wanted to ask him “whether he doesn’t shower that warmly in winter or whether he’s worried about the gas that is about to come from Qatar.” He couldn’t stand the “eternal teasing”.

Hoeneß also referred to the criticism of FC Bayern, which he still represents as honorary president. Rettig also spoke about the often criticized partnership with Qatar, something about sponsorship or as a goal of the winter training camp.

“If the FC Bayern club, which belongs to the members, says that they don’t want that, that will is to be accepted,” the 59-year-old had previously argued. “That’s why I didn’t understand FC Bayern’s argument in the discussion. With this policy of turning a blind eye, we’re where we are.”

Hoeneß, on the other hand, advocates the view that the partnerships with countries like Qatar, as well as the World Cup, ensure improvements on the ground.

He emphasized: “One thing is also clear: the workers in Qatar are better off because of the World Cup, not worse off. You should finally accept that and not constantly hit people.”

“The World Cup, FC Bayern’s commitment and other sports activities in the Gulf region will lead to better working conditions for the people there. I’ve never heard anything about Dubai, Kuwait etc. They only talk about Qatar . The only country where things are really getting better because this discussion is taking place is Qatar,” Hoeneß continued.

Rettig accuses Hoeneß of “sportswashing” and asks for clarification

After the announcement by the emotional ex-official, Rettig immediately countered and teased back: “I’m not surprised that you argue like that, Mr. Hoeneß, as Qatar’s ambassador. I mean, you’ve been connected to the company for years.”

At the same time, he accused him of “sportswashing”, i.e. the approach through which sports events and partnerships in sports are used to ensure that countries that are criticized for human rights and the like appear in a good light.

“I strongly recommend that you get an explanation of the circumstances in this country and how people work there,” concluded Rettig.
