The new royal couple of Denmark appeared in the city of Aarhus a week after the proclamation. A service to mark the change of throne took place there on Sunday afternoon. king Frederik (55) and Queen Mary (51) appeared beaming to the many people who waited in front of the cathedral despite the snowfall to catch a glimpse of the royals. And they were rewarded: The two took the time to wave extensively to the crowd. The royal couple also brought surprise guests.

Whole family shows up

The royal couple was accompanied by their four children Christian (18), Isabella (16) and the twins Vincent and Josephine (13). As with the proclamation on January 14th in Copenhagen, it had not previously been announced that the princes and princesses would be there. And the resigned Queen Margrethe II (83) also took part in the service. She wore a purple dress and a gray faux fur coat. Her son presented himself in uniform, his wife also chose the color purple. She wore a matching scarf, leather gloves and hat with the knee-length dress.

The couple’s daughters also opted for bright colors: Princess Isabella wore a pastel pink coat and her sister Princess Josephine wore a light blue coat. The sons appeared in dark blue suits.

Queen Margrethe II shocked the Danes by announcing her resignation in her New Year’s address on December 31st. After exactly 52 years, she left the throne to her eldest son last Sunday. The Crown Prince thus became King Frederik X. His eldest son Christian now carries the title of Crown Prince and moved to first place in the list of succession to the throne.
