Constantine II is dead. According to media reports, the last king of Greece died in Athens at the age of 82.

Constantine II, the last king of Greece, is dead. According to Greek media reports, he died on January 10 at the age of 82. Accordingly, he had increasingly struggled with health problems in recent months and spent the last days of his life in the intensive care unit of a hospital in Athens.

Constantine II was appointed heir to the throne in 1947 and ascended it in 1964. In the year of his accession to the throne, he also married the Danish Princess Anna-Maria, a sister of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark. About three years later, however, a military coup followed before the monarchy in Greece was officially abolished in 1974. From 1967 he lived in exile with his wife, first in Rome and later in London. The two only returned to Greece in 2013.

Other well-known relatives of Constantine II include his sister Sophia (84), the former Queen of Spain. In addition, Prince Philip, who died in 2021 at the age of 99, was a cousin of Constantine II.
