King Charles III has cancer: Why Charles’ suffering is so upsetting to the British

Just sixteen months ago, Queen Elizabeth II died and with her the British illusion of the stability of their nation. Now her son Charles has been diagnosed with cancer – another stroke of fate in a long series for many people.

It was a memorable Monday, February 5th, when the British learned of their king’s illness. He began with headlines about the appalling health status of thousands of British babies and young children: The survival rate of infants in the kingdom is lower than in 60 percent of comparable countries, according to the Academy of Medical Sciences. One in five toddlers is overweight or obese, and one in four has teeth affected by tooth decay. The number of children growing up in extreme poverty tripled from 2019 to 2022.
