VIENNA. According to the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety – AGES for short – the number of registered measles cases in this country is currently increasing. Only in the federal capital was there last week eleven cases. Since the beginning of the year there has been a total 24 cases – significantly more than in previous years. That’s why the city is now warning, according to “ORF Vienna”.
Typical symptoms are high fever, cough, runny nose and, a few days later, a red rash. Unvaccinated small children are particularly affected. The city’s kindergartens and schools warned this week in a letter that was sent to management and management.
The letter draws attention to the current infection situation and warns about the dangers of measles. The wording says:
“Make your staff, as well as parents and legal guardians, aware of the current infection situation. Encourage the above-mentioned people to check their vaccination protection, as well as the vaccination protection of their children, and to carry out a catch-up vaccination as soon as possible if they have not had a double vaccination or have not had the infection safely “
Vaccination gap arose
Julia Pongracz from the City of Vienna’s Epidemic Prevention Department told “ORF Vienna” that there are currently some measles cases that come from abroad: “Of course it is the case that due to the CoV pandemic, many vaccinations have not been carried out or have been delayed. That means, “A so-called vaccination gap has arisen”.
The disease is often associated with serious complications, especially in children under five years of age and in adults over 20 years of age. However, these could be avoided through vaccination. The measles vaccination rate among young adults is 86 percent (as of 2022).
