The fight for oil, the fight for money or just fight – packaged with humor: these are the cinema tips for October.

Money and the greed for it also rules the cinema world – at least that’s the impression a look at some of the promising film releases in October gives. Martin Scorsese (80) sends in “Killers of the Flower Moon” once again uses his all-purpose weapons Leonardo DiCaprio (48) and Robert De Niro (80) in a bloody power struggle over oil. Meanwhile, in “Dumb Money – Fast Money” the also real farce surrounding the GameStop shares is shown It went through the roof out of the blue in 2021, treated humorously and tragically. Thanks to “Freelance”, fans of action slapstick will also get their money’s worth.

“Freelance”, October 5th

Life as a family man working in a law firm is slowly but surely boring ex-soldier Mason Pettits (John Cena, 46) to death. The offer from a former military comrade (Christian Slater, 54) comes at just the right time: Mason is supposed to accompany the renowned journalist Claire Wellington (Alison Brie, 40) on her trip to the South American country of Paldonia and act as her bodyguard there. Personal protection is also desperately needed because: Claire is the first journalist ever to have an interview with the dictator Juan Arturo Venegas (Juan Pablo Raba, 46) – but in the middle of the appointment, a military coup unfortunately occurs…

Assessment:

Wrestler John Cena feels right at home in the “action comedy” film category. The muscle mountain didn’t just prove this with his role in films and series as the DC anti-hero Peacemaker. The story of “Freelance” immediately allows numerous associations: “The Interview”, paired with “Massive Talent” and seasoned with over-the-top “True Lies” action slapstick. Cena may never come close to the screen presence of Arnold Schwarzenegger (76). In combination with “Community” star Alison Brie, “Freelance” could offer just the right kind of relaxed entertainment for many.

“Killers of the Flower Moon,” October 19

Thanks to unexpected oil deposits, the Osage Nation became one of the wealthiest peoples in the world almost overnight at the beginning of the 20th century. However, the new wealth attracts white invaders who manipulate, blackmail and ultimately murder the natives to get the money. After a shocking series of murders, the newly formed FBI begins the investigation. In the midst of all this chaotic violence, white Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio) falls in love with native woman Mollie Kyle (Lily Gladstone, 36).

Assessment:

Film fans can really look forward to a real “Scorsese”: high tension, peaks of violence and finely developed characters, which this time are based on real people and are embodied by Scorsese’s all-purpose weapons DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, among others. “Killers of the Flower Moon” is based on the non-fiction book of the same name about the Osage murders that took place between 1910 and 1930 – making the film a star-studded, over 200-minute-long and much-needed history lesson.

“Dumb Money – Quick Money”, October 26th

Keith Gill (Paul Dano, 39) is a financial analyst and gives stock market tips on his YouTube channel. He comes across the stock of the video game store chain GameStop and takes an almost insane risk. Gill puts his entire savings into GameStop shares and lets the outside world participate through his channel – with incredible consequences: his videos go viral and the share value suddenly goes through the roof. But while small investors are happy about the unexpected windfall, hedge fund managers Gabe Plotkin (Seth Rogen, 41), Steve Cohen (Vincent D’Onofrio, 64) and Ken Griffin (Nick Offerman, 53) are not happy about this development. They speculated that the company would go bankrupt and are therefore making a lot of noise about Gill.

Assessment:

The strange GameStop case dominated the news world for weeks in 2021. Once again it was shown that reality is sometimes the best source for satire. Anyone who fluctuated between bewilderment and laughter when watching Adam McKay’s (55) darkly humorous film “The Big Short” will also enjoy “Dumb Money”. Similar to the 2015 film, which dealt with the global financial crisis around 15 years ago, Craig Gillespie’s (56) film, with plenty of gallows humor, is also dedicated to the sometimes very dubious machinations on Wall Street – as we know there are also wolves there…
