Kibbutz Nir Oz: A resident returns after the Hamas attack

For Ori Rubin, Nir Oz was once his home, now it is a crime scene. A quarter of the residents are no longer there. Returning to a place that will never be what it once was.

First he takes a photo of the car. With his smartphone, Ori Rubin walks from the driver’s seat over to the passenger side. The windows are broken, the doors are open. Rubin’s parents had parked it when all was well on their kibbutz in southern Israel. That was before Hamas invaded Israel from the Gaza Strip on October 7, killing hundreds of soldiers and civilians. Since then nothing has been as it once was. Not in Israel and not in Rubin’s life.
