The long Brezhnev era of the Soviet Union, which ended forty years ago, was later labeled “Golden Age of Stagnation.” This idea of a peaceful standstill is of course very distorting for a period of government that was framed by the violent end of the Prague Spring in 1968 and the invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. Above all, however, was the internal peace in the Soviet Union that is praised with this phrase acute threat to all people who found it difficult to adapt to the gray mediocrity. The “Kharkov School of Photography”, which is now being presented in an exhibition at the Wolfsburg Art Museum, is an example of the aesthetic partisan struggle of free spirits under Brezhnev.
