The beautiful gray train takes just under four hours to cover the 500-kilometer route from Kyiv to Kharkiv. On this morning of September 9, the day after the start of the Ukrainian counteroffensive, it is almost empty. We are alone in the wagon, accompanied by a small escort of Ukrainian volunteers. And the Kharkiv train station is deserted in the late summer’s grainy light.
