Khan Yunis: dead after airstrike in southern Gaza

There were apparently deaths following an Israeli airstrike on Sunday in the town of Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip. Doctors Without Borders reports at least 70 deaths in Nasser Hospital. The clinic itself had previously spoken of at least 47 people being killed. The information cannot be independently verified.

Doctors Without Borders also reported, citing its staff at the clinic, that dozens of patients, including many children and adolescents, had to be treated for severe burns. The Israeli army did not initially release a statement on reports of attacks in the south of the Gaza Strip. Israel accuses Hamas of using civilian facilities and civilians as protective shields.

The city of Khan Yunis has been attacked before. According to Palestinian information, at least 26 people were killed and more than 20 were seriously injured.

A photographer reported to the German Press Agency about many body bags lined up in the clinic. Doctors Without Borders’ project manager in southern Gaza, Christophe Garnier, said: “The medical need is enormous.” The group is ready to expand its operations, but needs “basic security guarantees and unrestricted access to medical and humanitarian supplies,” he said, and called for a ceasefire:

In Gaza, people in Khan Yunis were apparently asked to leave parts of the city and seek safety. ZDF correspondent Henriette de Maiziere reports.

Israeli Defense Minister Joav Galant announced on Saturday that the attacks in the Gaza Strip would soon be expanded to the south. The military has been calling on northern residents for more than a month to flee to a southern zone west of Khan Yunis on the Mediterranean. Most recently, residents of Khan Yunis were also called upon to flee for the first time.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, criticized the Israeli military for issuing leaflets calling for people to move into shelters in the wake of the Middle East conflict in Khan Yunis. But that doesn’t exist: “Nowhere in the Gaza Strip is safe,” says Türk.
