Oscar winner Spacey is due to appear in court in London today on alleged sexual assault charges. He is charged with twelve misdemeanors. When he appeared, however, he was self-confident.
Kevin Spacey arrived at court early in the morning. At around eight-thirty local time, a black cab, one of London’s black cabs, pulled up outside Southwark Crown Court on the Thames. Wearing a dark suit, light blue shirt and pink tie, Spacey flashed a guarded smile and greeted the waiting press with a “Good morning.” He also briefly raised his hand in greeting.
The actor looked quite confident just walking those few meters to the entrance of the courthouse, and it would stay that way in the hours that followed. In the sober courtroom number 1 he sat down in the glass case, as is usual for the accused in such cases. From there he watched intently as the judge opened the hearing and the jury was sworn in. It is the jury members who will ultimately find Spacey guilty or not guilty.
Not the first process
Spacey already knows the procedure, for him it is not the first process for alleged sexual assault. As a result of the allegations, which first came up in 2017, the 63-year-old suffered a dramatic professional slump. His star role as Frank Underwood in the Netflix series “House of Cards” came to an abrupt end.
At Christmas 2018, Spacey released a video apparently hungry to be in front of the camera and fight for his reputation. In “Let Me Be Frank,” he says things he would probably like to shout out to the jury in the courtroom: “You wouldn’t believe the worst without evidence, would you? You wouldn’t rush to a verdict without evidence knowing the facts, right? Or did you? No, you don’t. You’re too smart for that.” Conclusions can be so fallacious, he says at the end of this video.
Serious allegations
At the moment nobody knows what the jury in London will conclude. So far, Spacey has not been convicted of sexual assault. Two lawsuits against him have been dropped in the US and another, a civil lawsuit in New York, ended in an acquittal in his favor last fall.
The two-time Oscar winner also hopes for this in London, but the allegations are sometimes considered serious. They range from sexual harassment to coercion to have sex. The process should take around four weeks.
