Kevin Mayer leads the decathlon before the 1500m

Kevin Mayer, who started a great comeback on this second day of the decathlon, will aim for gold in the 1500m, the last event (4:20 am, French time). The Frenchman took the lead by winning the javelin, his only victory so far. With 70.31 m, the world record holder delivered one of the best performances of his career and totaled 8145 points.

But one of his main opponents, Zachery Ziemek, in sparkling form, broke his record with 62.18m. The American is second with 8038 points. In competition B, the Canadian Pierce LePage, in the lead before the event, was at his level with 57.52 m (3rd with 8027 pts).

In the 1500m, Mayer will not have to let them go to win: he must not finish more than 16 seconds behind LePage and 18” behind Ziemek.
