Kelheim: Man with gun causes riot in old town – Bavaria

The police have arrested a man with a firearm in Kelheim, Lower Bavaria. The two-hour operation ended lightly: There were no injuries, as the Lower Bavaria police headquarters announced on Tuesday evening. The 33-year-old organized a major operation in the historic old town of Kelheim starting in the afternoon.

He was slightly injured during the arrest and was in police custody, it was said late in the evening. Special forces called in specially arrested him. “There is no danger to the population,” a spokeswoman said afterwards. The traffic closures would be lifted again in the evening.

The police were informed around 4:10 p.m. that a man with an unspecified firearm was in the Maximilian Bridge area. Emergency services that arrived immediately prevented him from moving, but were initially unable to access him directly. The streets around the site were therefore cordoned off over a large area. While the special forces arrived, the population was asked to avoid the area around the central Maximilian Bridge.

At 6:20 p.m. the man was arrested in the Lower Bavarian district town with around 17,000 inhabitants. According to police, he comes from the city area. Further information about the background or the weapon was initially not known.
