It’s a special weekend for the British royals. Prince William and Kate’s first-born son turns ten this Saturday. As is tradition at Kensington Palace, Prince George’s day of honor is being celebrated with a new portrait photo. But this time something is different.
It’s hard to believe that it’s already ten years since Kate and William presented the little, former heir to the throne George to the world in front of St. Mary’s Hospital in London. A lot has happened since then: William and Kate had two more children with Charlotte and Louis, Prince Harry and Meghan completed the “Megxit” and broke away from the royal family to start a new life in the United States.

In addition, both George’s great-grandfather, Prince Philip, and his great-grandmother, the Queen of Great Britain, Elizabeth II, died during this time. Charles has now been crowned king. At least since he came to power, a lot has changed in the royal family. It broke with various traditions to bring a breath of fresh air to the monarchy. On George’s birthday, too, a cherished tradition was broken.

As every year, in honor of the birthday man, the palace released a new portrait. Mama Kate started this tradition years ago and kept it with all other children. What is special: Kate always took the pictures herself. Now, on George’s first milestone birthday, she is deviating from this habit.
Prince George’s portrait was taken by royal photographers
Now the picture officially released by the palace comes from a professional royal photographer. In the photo, George is sitting on the steps of Windsor Castle, his pose already looks really grown up and is reminiscent of his dad William.
William and Kate also posted the picture on their official Instagram channel, sending happy birthday wishes to their eldest son. It remains to be seen whether it will stay with this photo or whether Kate will publish a self-taken photo of her son.
