Karstadt at Munich Central Station is closing these days – Munich

In 1905, the seductive and cosmopolitan consumer palace of Hermann Tietz, who reinvented the shopping spree here, opened at the main station. Now what was once the second largest department store in Germany is closing – if it doesn’t come to a surprising turn of events.

From small beginnings, a merchant from Birnbaum in Posen creates a department store empire that makes shopping in almost every major city in Germany an experience. In 1905 Hermann Tietz also opened a consumer palace in Munich, so seductive, cosmopolitan and noble that the long-established shops looked poor. The colossal building at the main train station with its atrium 20 meters high and wide impresses the reporter from back then just as much as the goods on display. “It should be possible to cover all the needs of the household at the same time with one exit”, is in the Munich Latest News dated March 14, 1905.
