Kanye West is now called Ye – that’s behind it

“I am YE”: With these words, Kanye West introduced himself on Twitter in September 2018. At the time, very few people realized how serious he was about it. Because shortly before that, the rapper had released an album of the same name: “Ye” was released on June 1, 2018 and had climbed to the top of the charts in the USA.

But in August of this year, the 44-year-old submitted an application to the US authorities for a name change: Kim Kardashian’s still-husband wanted to officially call himself Ye. Now a court in Los Angeles has approved an application for a name change, as reported by the US media.

But why does the successful musician want to change his established name? The musician spoke about this in a radio interview in 2018. “I think ‘ye’ is the most common word in the Bible, and the Bible means you,” West said at the time. “So I am you, I am we,” he explained his thoughts. It developed from Kanye, which means “the only one”, to Ye – “a reflection of our good, our bad, our confusion and everything”.

These seemingly confused thoughts reflect a megalomania that has long been inherent in the rapper. In the past, the artist has repeatedly referred to himself as a “genius”. A verdict that many critics even agree with – his albums regularly receive the highest praise. But Ye’s megalomania is not limited to music, he also has a call to higher things apart from art: last year he even ran for the presidential election.

In the process, however, he experienced a debacle: nationwide, he only received around 60,000 votes. In private life, too, things are anything but smooth: his wife Kim Kardashian, with whom he has four children, filed for divorce in February of this year.

Now the man who was once Kanye West can at least start over: he now has a new name. We can look forward to further great deeds.
