Justice confirms cancellation of Roundup Pro 360 marketing

This should reignite the debate on glyphosate. The Lyon Court of Appeal has just confirmed the cancellation of the marketing of Roundup 360. The product, manufactured by Monsanto (which has since become Bayer), is widely used in the vineyards in particular. This weedkiller contains 40% of glyphosate and adjuvants “about 1,000 times more toxic than glyphosate alone”, according to the Committee for Research and Independent Information on Genetic Engineering at the origin of the complaint filed in 2017.

The Lyon administrative court, in January 2019, requested that the product be withdrawn from the market, judging at the time that it was dangerous for health. “Scientific studies and animal experiments have shown that Roundup Pro 360, a preparation whose toxicity is greater than that of glyphosate, is a potentially carcinogenic product for humans, suspected of being toxic for human reproduction and for animals. aquatic organisms ”, then raised the administrative judge. This did not prevent Bayer from appealing this decision.

Risk of harm to the environment

In its judgment, published on Wednesday, the Lyon Court of Appeal confirms the administrative tribunal, considering in turn that the Food Safety and Environment Agency (ANSES) has “committed an error of assessment ”by authorizing the marketing of the weedkiller in 2017.

“A plant protection product which disregards the requirements of the precautionary principle guaranteed by Article 5 of the Environmental Charter cannot legally” be marketed, she argues. And to drive home the point: “The latest state of scientific knowledge, available on the day of the disputed authorization, was such as to support the hypothesis of a risk of harm to the environment; a risk associated with the use of glyphosate and that associated with other coformulants, liable to seriously harm health ”.
