The investigation into an explosion that caused millions in damages in Putgarten on Rügen is coming to an end. Now the cause is clear. A mechanic should be responsible.

Almost five months after a serious gas explosion in Putgarten on the island The cause has been clarified. A worker made a mistake when installing a gas meter in the exploded holiday home, said Stralsund public prosecutor’s spokesman Martin Cloppenburg. This is what the technical report revealed.

There is a suspicion that an explosive explosion may have been caused. Cloppenburg expects an indictment by the beginning of 2024. The radio station Ostseewelle MV had previously reported.

On May 26th, a holiday home in the holiday complex in Putgarten exploded shortly before Cape Arkona. Debris flew several hundred meters and damaged at least 13 neighboring houses and several cars. A fire then broke out, which also spread to a neighboring house that was covered with reeds. Nobody got hurt. The police estimated the total damage at more than one million euros.

There is a risk of a fine or imprisonment

The suspect is said to have installed the meter a few days beforehand. He still has to comment on this and has not yet been heard about the accusation, according to the public prosecutor’s office. According to the police, the owner of the exploded holiday home, a man from Leipzig, was about to come to Putgarten shortly after the incident.

Because of the installation error, gas leaked out and when the heating switched on automatically before guests arrived, an explosion occurred. “How lucky that no one was in the houses yet,” said the spokesman for the public prosecutor’s office.

The charge carries a fine or a prison sentence of up to three years. The installer’s company is usually responsible for clarification of damages under civil law.
