Actor Jussie Smollett has been sentenced to 150 days in prison after investigations revealed he allegedly staged a racist and homophobic assault. There is also a suspended sentence and a fine.
Jussie Smollett has been sentenced to 150 days in prison and a 30-month suspended sentence in Chicago. He also has to pay the city about $120,000 and a $25,000 fine. Judge James Linn called him “arrogant, selfish and narcissistic”.
Chicago: Jussie Smollett sentenced to prison
At the end of January 2019, Smollett apparently faked a racist and homophobic attack against him by allegedly instructing two acquaintances to attack him. He then told police the two white men put a noose around his neck and said, “This is a ‘MAGA’ country,” referring to Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” exclamation. In fact, the men were not white but black brothers who said they were paid by Smollett.
Judge Linn made it clear in court that Smollett’s action could make it harder for actual victims to go public. Smollett ruined his own life because he wanted public attention by any means necessary. “You were looking for attention, you wanted to be even more famous,” Linn told Smollett.
His grandmother testified for him
The 92-year-old grandmother of the former “Empire” star had previously defended her grandson. The media misreported the case, saying it was a “justice fighter.” Smollett himself spoke up in the courtroom and continued to protest his innocence. “If he dies in prison, it won’t be suicide,” he shouted to Judge Linn before being escorted out of the room. As he walked out, Smollett raised his fist in the air, a sign of the Black Power movement.
The prison sentence begins immediately, Jussie Smollett wants to appeal.
