Eintracht legend Jürgen Grabowski passed away at the age of 77. The 1974 World Champion had been in poor health for years.

Former soccer player and Eintracht Frankfurt legend Jürgen Grabowski is dead. His former club announced this via Twitter, among other things. Accordingly, the world champion of 1974 died yesterday evening at the age of 77. It’s a sad day for Eintracht Frankfurt, according to officials: “A big one is leaving the stage. A legend is leaving us.”

In a longer obituary from the club, it is also said that Grabowski had had poor health in recent years and had to have dialysis regularly. Traveling was also difficult for him, but he was only in the stadium for a few games of his Frankfurt Eintracht in autumn 2021. The club did not provide any further details on the cause of death or Grabowski’s illness.

Jürgen Grabowski became world champion in 1974 with the DFB selection

Born in Wiesbaden, he came to Frankfurt in 1965 and laced up his football boots for Eintracht 441 times before he retired in 1980. He scored 109 goals. Overall, he wore the jersey of the German national team 44 times. In 1972 he became European champion with the DFB team. His greatest success was winning the 1974 World Cup in his own country alongside football icons such as Franz Beckenbauer (76), Sepp Maier (78), Paul Breitner (70), Gerd Müller (1945-2021) and Uli Hoeneß (70). With Frankfurt he won the DFB Cup in 1974 and 1975 and the UEFA Cup in 1980.
