Four Hills Tournament live: Jumping Innsbruck – Wellinger with weak qualification

At the third station of the 72nd Four Hills Tournament, Wellinger showed some nerves for the first time because he missed out on a top placement in the qualification in Innsbruck. After his jump of 119.5 meters in changeable wind conditions, the leader of the tour ranking only took 15th place and was twelve places behind his closest competitor for the overall victory, the Japanese Ryoyu Kobayashi.

The two-time tour winner, Wellinger’s first pursuer, only 1.8 points behind, came third with 129.0 meters and seems to be able to handle the hill better than the German.

The victory in the qualification in front of 7,500 spectators at the Bergiselschanze was secured by the Slovenian Anze Lanisek (134.0 meters), who had already won the qualification and later the jumping at the second tour stop in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Four Hills Tournament live: Jumping in Innsbruck – strength needs to catch up

Karl Geiger had a weak day. The 2020/21 tour runner-up fell short of his potential in 33rd place, as did Pius Paschke, who came 35th as the weakest athlete in the German Ski Association. Philipp Raimund was the second best German behind Wellinger in 20th place, Stephan Leyhe came in 30th.

The Austrian top favorite Stefan Kraft is already around 15 meters behind the leading duo. In the qualification, which was influenced by changing winds, he impressed with a jump of 124.5 meters and thus took second place. The 30-year-old needs to catch up in order to be able to take the overall victory. (smr)
