Julianna Townsend takes three steps, sits cross-legged and turns on the record player. The music starts and the picture flickers. The camera is now very close to her face – showing the singer’s big brown eyes and glossy lips. Then, finally, Townsend begins to sing.
This is how it starts Music video of the song “Smoke & Mirrors”, which was released almost four years ago. Since then, the Mainz singer has hardly released any new clips. And their first album is still a long time coming. It’s all the more astonishing that Townsend is now going on her first tour through Germany: the concert kicks off this Saturday in Mainz, followed by a concert in Munich’s Milla Club on Sunday. The Munich rapper Roger Rekless will be on stage as a guest.
The musician already celebrated streaming success with her debut single “Sunday Blues” in 2019. This was followed by an EP (“Day One”) and other songs, which she released at increasing intervals. She was on a journey of self-discovery, writes the singer, using music as a vehicle for growth. This resulted in the single “Falling Slowly” (2023) – a profound, serious song compared to its beginnings.
At the age of 14, Townsend composed his first songs, played in bands and won singing competitions in the “Soul” and “Pop” categories. Today the solo artist, who was in the final of “Germany’s Next Top Model” in 2018 and has also been modeling since then, explores influences from R’n’B and hip-hop. Sings ballads as well as feel-good songs.
The special thing about all of this is certainly Townsend’s powerful voice. She carries emotions into the room seemingly effortlessly and exudes a pleasant warmth with her singing. So their “Trust me, I’m fine” tour is long overdue in the best sense of the word. Friends of soul and pop music can look forward to a total of six concerts by the singer. And as she announces online: also a new EP.
