Mr. Nida-Rümelin, philosophers have been thinking about what a better world could look like for a long time. They want one without a cancel culture. What worries you?
I am concerned about the global crisis of democracy. It has many causes, such as wars or growing social inequality. But some of these causes are cultural. The foundation of democracy includes not only elections every few years, but also a certain way of dealing with one another sensibly, listening to one another’s speech freely, accepting different opinions and thus coming to one’s own convictions. Cancel Culture is the opposite of that. It contributes to the cultural erosion of democracies worldwide.
